How To Clean Your Refrigerator

I admit it, my fridge was not looking good. Kind of embarrassing really. But on my Fall Cleaning List in big letters is 'Clean Your Refrigerator.' So I did it.

Messy Refrigerator!
Did you hear the scary movie music when you looked at this picture? I did every time I opened it!!

Materials:

  • sink with HOT water
  • soap
  • Shaklee's Basic H2
  • towels, towels, towels (cloth dish towels, not paper!)
  • cooler
  • 2 new boxes of baking soda
Directions:
  • Take everything out.
  • Put anything that needs to stay cold into a cooler... we may be here for awhile.

  • Throw everything out that has passed its expiration date.
  • Anything that you haven't used in over 6 months (I admit it) needs to go.
  • Anything you know you won't use needs to go.
  • Recycle everything that can be recycled. Plastic, glass, foil etc... If your not sure look up your areas recycling rules.

    Empty Fridge
  • Take all of the shelves, drawers, racks out. Anything that can be removed comes out.
  • Wash each piece with hot soapy water in your kitchen sink.
  • Dry with towels and set aside. Continue until all are clean.
  • Spray Shaklee's Degreaser on the inside of the refrigerator and wipe clean. Don't worry Shaklee is safe to use around food and little fingers.Put all of the racks, shelves, and drawers back in.
  • Replace baking soda with a fresh box.
  • Put your food back into this gorgeous fridge!!

Clean!

  • Don't forget to do the freezer!!

  2. Well, I just stumbled onto your blog. Nice job on the the fridge. What caught my eye is that I have the same exact one. Is yours magnetic on the front? Mine isn't and I am totally bummed about it. It's a major pain.

  3. No, it isn't but the sides are! I don't think you can see from the pictures but it is COVERED on the sides with calendars, pictures etc.... I was sad at first but then realized that its actually less cluttered looking with all of my "stuff" on the sides. Check it out!!

  5. I love having a clean organised fridge. It's such a nice feeling! One thing I do to try and stay on top of the mess inbetween the big cleans is to keep a list of leftovers on the outside of the fridge. I have a reuseable dry erase sticker on the front for that, and one on the side for the grocery list. It helps cut down a little bit on the mystery items in tupperware.

Hope you don't mind all the comments I've left! Tonight was actually the second time I've stumbled across your blog in the last couple of days. I love your topics so you better get used to the comments. ;)

  15. I was a little disappointed you didn't use any Method tub and tile :)

I also just wanted to say to be sure when you're tossing your food that it's really bad. People waste a lot of food and money throwing it out past its sell by date, but sell by is not expiration date and this is especially true with dairy. Milk is good up to a week past the sell by date, yogurt 10-14 days, eggs 3 or 4 weeks and hard cheese up to 4 months past! They great part about dairy is that you always know when it has gone bad, just use your nose :)

  16. Laura: Thanks for stopping by! I do like the freezer on the bottom. It was a challenge at first to figure out a way to keep the drawer organized but so far so good. There is more room in it than the old one.

Quinn: I know! I only pull out the tub n' tile for the big stuff:) and I will not even tell you how long some of our condiments had been in there.... pretty sure they moved from our old house:( I admit it.... don't judge!!

  19. your fridge cleaning is an inspiration for many, i clean my fridge every 6 months as its important to have a clean cold storage, one way to keep it stink free is to cut a lemon in half and place in anywhere, your freezer will never stink, its my best tip:) i love the way you made your fridge into a great storage
