I have been crushing over the Chelsea wing chair from Williams- Sonoma Home lately. Since I have decided to use mostly reused furniture for our home makeover, I was feeling conflicted. Love the chair, want the chair, but I have professed to all of my readers that I will be using reused furniture. What is a girl to do?

I checked out Craig's list and found 2 matching white wing chairs. They were nothing special but I liked the shape and thought they would look perfect in front of the fireplace. Ordered 2 slip covers, since I don't sew, and picked up antique nickel decorative nails at Joanne Fabrics. With the kids in bed I sat down in front of a weeks worth of Oprah and went to work.

I LOVE the way these turned out. I think the nailhead trim will also help keep the slipcovers in place. Great job!

I know, I can't stand tucking and re-tucking slip covers. I am also a huge fan of the tailored look so this works out really well. I tested it by sitting on it about 20 times! The slip covers don't move at all. SO GREAT!
ReplyDeleteI have the exact same chairs but in an awful minty green color..... where did you get your slipcovers? I just may have to do this myself!
ReplyDeleteJC Penny. Its the sure-fit natural skirted slip cover. I used a promo code, so it was a pretty good deal!
ReplyDeleteThese are brilliant!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great solution! Looks beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing in the DIY Project Parade!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
Roeshel
This is a fabulous idea...and a great way to personalize a slipcovered chair! And thanks for telling us where you got the slipcover. I have a wingchair that has been patiently sitting around wanting, screaming for a new dress!
ReplyDeleteLookd great - can not wait to see more! Liz @ designing domesticity
ReplyDeleteLooks terrific! What a great idea to update the chairs!
ReplyDeleteWOW! That turned out so well! I might have to try this sometime...thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteDenise
That is FANTASTIC!!! My mom and I found a great wingback chair today at Goodwill. This would be the perfect cure for the ugly upholstery!
ReplyDeleteThe chairs look great and I am amazed how you turned those slip covers into a really custom look. You need to tell your husband that you just saved him $850 a chair!
ReplyDeleteAnd don't be surprized if you see everyone coping your idea! I just may!
Lacy
I can't believe that's the same chair! My parents have an ugly old chair like this. I'll have to email this post to them so they can update theirs as well :)
ReplyDeleteWow- You did a beautiful job on an unfitted looking slipcover- so very creative and inspiring!!
ReplyDeleteWow, these are awesome. What a good idea!
ReplyDeleteLove it! What a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI am extremely impressed with how this turned out! Where did you get the slip covers?
ReplyDeletehttp://40daysof.wordpress.com/2010/11/14/bathroom-before-after/
The slip cover is the EZ care twill wing chair slip cover from JCPenny in Ivory. They are currently on sale for about 60$
ReplyDeleteHow fabulous! I would not have thought to combine a premade slipcover with the nail heads!
ReplyDeleteOk I'm very impressed. It looks amazing. Who would have thought that you could make basic slip covers look so good. Absolutely awesome. Linked over from between naps on the porch.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. My cabinet doors are from Conestoga and the lighter ones are called crystal white colourtone with a coffee glaze. I love your blog and just became a follower. Follow me too if you'd like.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on an amazing job! Inspiring, really!
ReplyDeleteIt's adorable. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHow clever - they are so custom without all of the sewing. Nice work.

Hi Sarah, I'm stopping over from Bonnie's blog House of Grace. First of all I love this project for a couple of reasons. One, I have a white slipcovered wing chair, so it drew my interest. And two, it's a project I've really not seen before. And it sure takes guts, but you pulled it off bigtime! It looks amazing, and best of all the covers will stay in place. Do you mind me asking where you bought the covers for such a great price? xoxo tami
ReplyDeleteHi Again Sarah, thanks so much for the info, and for entering my giveaway. They must be the sure fit as that is what jcp usually sells. What a great deal, I'll check them out for my other wing back, tami
ReplyDeleteI AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DOING THIS!!! THANK YOU FOR THE INSPIRATION!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think that is a wonderful makeover! The decorative nails look great!
ReplyDeleteI have a wing chair in the basement just waiting to be discovered again :) This is a great idea! Looks very high end! I know what I want for Christmas! Think I've popped by your blog before. I love your style!

ReplyDeleteSarah, these are gorgeous! The slipcovers look custom with that pretty nailhead trim.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking on craigslist for a pair of chairs like yours with pretty wood legs, but I've had no luck! Now, I really want a pair with slipcovers like yours!
Thanks for sharing at My Backyard Eden!
Hi Sarah, found you through POWW at Primitive and Proper...what a grand idea you had here! The chairs look as if they've been totally reupholstered. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI think it is gorgeous! I just posted about my design dilemma with upholstering a chair. Yours looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Sherry
What a find, and an ingenious way to make them work for you. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love that idea. I am going to have to tuck that in my pocket! It looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a creative way to make it your own! I love the way you cheated on the sewing part. A girl after my own heart. ;)
ReplyDeleteFollowed your link from My Backyard Eden's linky party.

HI Sarah! WOW this chair is gorgeous!! My son would ruin in it 5 seconds:) I am stopping by from the blog hop and I am your newest follower!! You can find me at www.bouffeebambini.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI commented earlier in the week about your chair, but it's worthy of saying again: what a fabulous idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind comments on my blog, Sarah. Though don't let my pics fool you! The room is still a work in progress and is a big mess. That photo was taken at a strategic angle. :) However, I do hope you are able to get your own space one day. I just have one boy, but am still outnumbered by boys in my house, and it's important to have a feminine space that's all yours. Best wishes!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I really like the sparkle from the nail head trim.
ReplyDeletebeautiful and tutorial is so light and easy, making us believe that anyone can do this...

ReplyDeleteOkay, maybe that wasn't quite as exciting as, say, you won the HGTV Urban Oasis giveaway (though you really can't win that because I'm going to) but I think it's still pretty fun ;)
I love this idea, but I have a quick question. I can see that the length on the slipcover is altered. Did you just staple it up and crease it?
ReplyDeleteyes, I folded it over and around the legs and stapled it to the bottom of the seat. No cutting!!
ReplyDeleteOMG...I would have posted sooner but I was knocked unconsious from the fall when I 1st laid eyes on this chair. Not only is it gorgeous but you did not sew??? Oh my....oh my oh my. LOVE this!!! I will steal this idea but promise to send kudos your way. You my dear...hit the jackpot of cuteness...your blog will explode from this little redo.
ReplyDeleteCheers~

ReplyDeletelooks super good. way to take that packaged slipcover up a notch!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love it! I needed a chair for my living room for guests who needed something firmer to sit in than my cushy loveseats. I recently found a wing chair at Goodwill in great shape, but it's oregano green in color. I am so pleased you shared where to buy the slipcover. I can see an update in my chair's future!
ReplyDeleteThis, my dear one, is flat out AWESOME. Boy, you did a fabulous job.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh.. you created an upholstered look out of a slipcover! This is so brilliant. :) I honestly liked the before but NOW I see you had a much bigger vision than I conjured up! Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteDonna

Great job! So much easier than the white slipcover I handmade. Will it be easy to take the nails/tacks out to wash it? I have one store bought slip on a love seat I should try this on while I'm making another slipcover for it. Check out the white one I made:

Love this! I have a hidious Mauve wing chair (circa 1990's!) in my daughters room with a sheet over it. I've been looking for a nice slipcover and I'm a sucker for nailhead trim! This will be on my project list!
ReplyDeleteDid you tuck up the bottom skirt to be shorter?
Courtney
www.reckless-glamour.com
Yes I tucked it under, no cutting just folded it up and stapled it to the frame! good luck!

ReplyDeleteVery cute project, I'm into nailheads too. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteWow... you made loose slip covers look like an upholstered piece. I love nail head trim, too. Well done!
ReplyDeleteGreat project- I have always wanted to be able to slipcover furniture- especially after getting a quote that it would cost about a thousand dollars to recover an antique sofa I found at a thrift store- yikes! One day I will tackle that project. Your chair looks pretty and professional.Hope you have a happy new year!
