This may be my favorite way to save money, reduce my carbon footprint, and feed my family delicious and nutritious food. Oh, and it makes my house smell delicious.
One loaf of home made bread made with organic flour, local honey, local butter, local milk, local eggs, costs.... are you ready for this? 65 cents.
I purchased my bread machine from a garage sale several years ago for 25$ It has paid for itself several times over.
So lets review all of the ways this loaf of bread is a better choice than store bought bread.
1) Local ingredients: Don't use as much fuel in transportation to the store. Come from farms using sustainable practices, which in turn produce better quality food.
2) Reduction in packaging: The flour and yeast were purchased in bulk and the flour was brought home in my own grain bags. Milk comes in returnable glass bottles.
3) Re-used bread machine: saved all of the fossil fuels it requires to build, package, and transport a new bread machine to the store. Not to mention the space in the landfill.
White Sandwich Bread Recipe
1/4 cup water
1 package dry yeast
3/4 cup whole milk
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons honey
1 large egg
1 and 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
Add all of the ingredients to the bowl of your bread maker. Add the yeast to the yeast cup. Use the light crust bread setting. 4 hours later, tada yummy bread.
Have you made your own bread before? What is your favorite recipe?
A few months ago my boyfriend and I made some very good bread, but for some reason we're just too busy atm now to make more. Can't wait until uni is finished and we can make homemade bread again, because it really is the best =)
ReplyDeleteOH YEEEESSS! I agree! The house smells amazing!! I need to get on the local honey bandwagon though...I used to get some out in Nebraska...but as of now, there is not a drop in the pantry :)
ReplyDeleteI try to bake fresh bread at least 1-2 times a week...mine is old fashioned in a bowl with a spoon...we lost that little tiny metal piece in the bottom of the breadmaker long ago...ah well!
Here's the recipe if you're interested :)

I've been thinking about getting a bread machine. I can't decide it I'll use it a lot or not at all though! :) I've been making my own pasta lately, so maybe this can be my next move. Thanks for the reminder and reasons why I need to! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree! Best purchase ever (I also bought mine second hand for dirt cheap to see if I liked it). I use mine to make homemade frozen bread dough a lot, bagels, breadsticks, and still use it every couple of day. My mom's recipe for the best Italian Herb Bread:
ReplyDelete1 1/4 cup warm water
1 T margarine
3 1/4 bread flour
2 T sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp Italian herbs
1 1/2 tsp yeast.
Awesome with soup or use leftovers to make grilled cheese!
I love homemade bread! I make my own foccacia and Italian breads, but not sandwich bread. Maybe I'll start...
ReplyDeleteI see a Calder's Dairy label! Love Calder's! Their egg nog is to die for and they have the best ice cream.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah, what a great idea, you are a genius! One day I'll get of those, hopefully at a garage sale too!! In the meantime I enjoy my brother's surprise visits once a month...he bakes the best bread and delivers to some great restaurants in town and once a month he leaves the most delicious parcel at my front door...!!! yum!
ReplyDeleteHave a great w/end
xo
I don't have a bread machine...been thinking about getting one. How did you find all of your sources for eggs, milk, and flour?
ReplyDeleteI've been yearning to make make our own bread and I've been searching and searching for a used machine, but I can't find one... I'd love to try out your recipe when I find it!

Looks delicious! I used to make homemade whole wheat bread when I first got married and was a natural food freak. (31 yrs. ago) Then life got in the way. I should definitely get back to that. You're right!
ReplyDeleteMy bread from my machine comes out in BRICKES! Really hard as a rock!! Any tips?
ReplyDeleteI have a bread maker and been meaning to use it... my manual talks about making a hole in the flour for the yeast.
ReplyDeleteis that what you are talking about when you say a yeast cup? because my bread maker does not have a separate cup lol
