Antique Cane Chairs- Before & After

Remember these $4 chairs?

After a few false starts I finally got back on track. First I sanded them down to remove the old finish. Then I used Cabot's Driftwood Gray in Semi-Transparent. I thought this was all I was going to do but the finish was a little too "rustic" especially paired with the bleached drop cloth. So I lightened it up with a quick white wash. And finally sealed it with, you guessed it, Johnson's Paste Wax.

For the seat I removed the old cover and replaced it with a bleached drop cloth. I added a white gimp around the trim and then finished up with 2 blue stripes in Benjamin Moore's Van Courtland Blue.

These chairs did not end up the way I had initially thought but I think they are better. Much more feminine than my inspiration piece that is for sure.

These are headed to RePurpose in Northville, you know Cash & Cari on HGTV! Wish me luck, I am SOO nervous, I hope they like them.

  7. I love the way they turned out. The driftwood color sounds like something I'd love to try. I will have to see if I can find it. Thanks for showing me the great RePurose site. I'd love to live close to a place like that!

  12. Hi Sarah--

I found my way here via Beth from A to Z. I just had to leave a comment to introduce myself. I have three boys, as well--but my boys are practically men by now. My oldest turns 20 this month; my youngest is 14. But when they were little boys, I lived in a darling Dutch colonial house in Michigan, so I feel a kinship to you! I haven't looked around much yet--I intend to!--but I just wanted to say hi.

A dear friend of mine lives in Northville. . . moved there fairly recently from Plymouth, actually. I saw that you're taking those chairs (which look great) to a shop in Northville. We lived in Hillsdale back in our Michigan days; Northville was a fun place to go for a day of eating in good restaurants and visiting lovely shops.

    So nice to meet you!
