Now that the old outfit is off, it's time to get rid of this old finish.
I sanded the whole chair using an 80 grit sanding block. Making sure to remove all of the old stain on the edges and detail. On the rest of the chair I just remove the gloss. This makes a difference down the line when I do the distressing.
A little wood glue to repair an arm that was only being held together by the old fabric.
Clamped overnight to ensure a good seal.
The first coat is a very light gray by Valspar, called filtered shade.
Second coat, just to highlight the details, is Benjamin Moore's van courtland blue.
Don't you just love this picture? The tattered cloth with the paint? LOVE! |
And finally a top coat of a very bright white.
The nice thing about this technique is that it doesn't have to be perfect. Actually the messier your painting, the better.
To finish up I distressed the entire chair with an 80 grit sanding block. But you are going to have to wait to see the results...
Tomorrow... she gets a new outfit!
You are bad, to leave everyone hanging like that! Just kidding. I can't wait to see more.... tomorrow! You work very fast by the way. It would take me at least a week, to get as far as you have in 2 days. See you soon.

Getting a little MissMustardSeed makeover, love it already. Let me guess drop cloth for the upholstery? Guess I'll have to wait and see. It does go to show just how easily a chair can be madeover, with a little vision and some elbow grease it can be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI know I am terrible:) Nope not Miss Mustard Seed... The fun part about doing furniture for other people is they pick the fabric. She picked a gorgeous pattern!!

ReplyDeleteAnother gorgeous transformation underway!
ReplyDeleteI have that old table like your library table and I have fully jumped in to refinishing it. I had to take it apart because the lower shelf was held on by random metal brackets. I've plowed into furniture repair, drilling out the old broken dowels, filling missing parts with wood filler and (with shocking success)using Aleene's Tacky Glue instead of wood glue, which I didn't have on hand.
Still trying to find a local source for the Rub 'n Buff. Ideas?
My hat off to you! :)
