Channel Backed Chair- Before & After

A few weeks ago a friend of mine asked me to give her pleated chair a makeover. I of course was happy to help her out. She wanted an antique gold finish and picked out the fabric.

She wanted the flower pattern on the front and stripes on the back. First I took all of the old upholstery off.

Primed and painted with Krylon 18kt Gold.

Once the paint had dried I dry brushed over the chair with Valspar's antiquing glaze. And sealed with Johnson's Paste Wax.

Slowly but surely began attaching the new fabric.

Added the double welt to hide the staples.

The pleats on this chair were definitely a challenge. I ended up making an entirely new back panel, using the old upholstery as a guide. Then I re-stuffed it with new fill. This was BY FAR my most ambitious project.

There were a few moments when I thought this was not going to happen. And may I say stripes may be the most UNFORGIVING pattern.... EVER.

I really loved how the gold finish turned out. I have a few other items that may be getting a similar finish.

I will be linking this up to

  1. Gorgeous! I absolutely love it. I had a chair similar to this. Alas, it wasn't properly secured in the truck when we were moving (young, silly people that we were!). The truck hit a bump, and the chair bounced down the hill. I think I cried.

Your finish is so pretty! Thanks for sharing the details. I'm off to hunt around the house to see what I can cover in gold. :o) Happy Wednesday!

  4. Fabulous! Love your work, the completed piece is magnificent. What do you use for new filling, if the inner chair stuffing is in need of replacement?

  5. I use Morning Glory Premium Polyester Fiber Fill. It goes in really easily without a lot of lumps. Since I was stuffing the pleats like pillows it worked perfectly!

  15. Absolutely great! Reupholstering a chair or piece of furniture is on my "I'm too chicken sh*t to attempt list". Scares me to attempt, not sure why. Just know I'd fail.

However! The paste wax on wood... any chance you'd email me some tips on that stuff? Exactly what it does? How to work with it best? You really know you're finishing products and would be great to get some advice.

    Thanks!

  17. I need you to live in southern Indiana! :) I was given a chair a year ago that is in serious need of reupholstering. I think it is going to need new stuffing and padding and everything else. I've never done more than just seat cushions, so I'm scared to start on it!
