Guest Post- Living Rich On Less

Hi there. I'm Susan, creator of Living Rich on Less. I was

thrilled when Sarah asked me to guest post this weekend on Three Boys. As

I'm sure you're already aware, Sarah is amazingly talented! Her skills in

reupholstering furniture are truly jaw-dropping and awe-inspiring. Plus,

she's a Shaklee distributor and, as I mentioned in my post on organizing under the sink, I

love Shaklee products -- particularly the Get Clean line.

OK. On to this week's thrifty fall pillow project.

If you're anything like me, you like to change out your throw pillows to

reflect the season. But with throw pillows ranging in price from about $15

to $80 apiece, this can be a real budget buster. I like to look for ways

to create my seasonal throw pillows for pennies on the dollar. This is my

latest creation.

I found two pillow covers at my

local thrift store. They cost $3 for the pair.

Then I went to work on them using my

Martha Stewart stencils and acrylic craft paint.

I used two out of the three paint

colors pictured for this project: Vanilla Bean and Summer Linen. I love

this paint because it works on many surfaces, including wood, glass, metal

and fabric. Plus it's non-toxic and weather-resistant. (For the record,

no, I am not being paid by Martha Stewart to write this. I just really do

like the stuff.)

When working with stencils, remember to press the stencil tight against

the surface to prevent any paint from bleeding under the edges. And,

for the love of Pete, try not to let that stencil shift around

while you're painting.

Once I finished carefully filling in

my first pattern, the pillow cover looked like this.

I added a few more stencils here and

there, filled the cover with an old pillow I had lying around, and

voila!

This project is easy, fast and, most

importantly, budget-friendly.

If we all had an unlimited supply of

time and money, we could create a beautiful space without much thought.

But isn't it so more fun and rewarding when we can do it in a few minutes

with just a few bucks?
