Now that I am hard at work rearranging furniture and the television is finally out of the fireplace (don't judge me.) I have found myself with a rather LARGE problem. As you may know I am trying to
decorate my entire house using mostly reused items. And so far I have been able to find everything without too much trouble, until now. I need to find a reused fireplace screen for a very large fireplace. It measures 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. Not exactly a lot of those running around craigslist...

So, I am turning to all of you creative, brilliant, bloggers to help me! I am open to any suggestion, anything that could be used as a fireplace screen, ANYTHING. The only requirement is that it has to be reused. You all are so creative, I just know one of you will have a GREAT idea. And of course who ever comes up with the best idea will be featured on Three Boys! I can't wait to read your ideas!

I found this project: http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/how-to-build-a-fire-screen/index.html
ReplyDeleteI think this would be cute and offers many options--for example, I think this would be cute if you used old shutters. The ReUse center and the Habitat for Humanity stores definitely have many options. Even if they're not exactly the same, with some paint you wouldn't be able to tell.
My aunt had a non working ugly fireplace in her house. I remember she used to keep a picture or canvas in front of the fireplace.
ReplyDeleteIf you are just wanting it it hide the big black hole, you could just make something like that with some reclaimed wood and fabric, canvas, etc. Then you could stencil a design or something on it to be decorative.
Shutters would be nice as mentioned.
Or maybe find some kind of metal screen or an old gate and make a frame out of wood for it.
I'd look for an architectural salvage supplier in your area for an old iron gate. Then, I'd call a company that constructs iron stair railings and have them attach legs. It really would be perfect for that fireplace.
ReplyDeleteMy own fireplace is small, but its a large wall much like yours. I purchased an inexpensive standard screen, painted it white and got a mantle from a flea market that I had stripped and painted white. It brightend up the wall dramatically.
Good luck!
I like this one out of old pipes:

But it might be tough to do yourself....
I saw something great a few years ago and can't find it again! I'm pretty sure it was off of Parent Hacks. Anyway, someone used old crib sides to make a fireplace screen. It looked great! I'll keep looking.
ReplyDeleteIf you could find a piece of furniture that has alot of decorative woodwork on it on one of the panels. Remove that panel. I am thinking like really old stereo consoles and tv consoles. Add two side panels and paint it really fun and you have yourself an architectural looking piece that is not only interesting but one of a kind.
ReplyDeleteOK, so I am thinking something metal... maybe an old gate...will have to check out the recycle shop and find something cool. I am a little nervous about welding.... hopefully I can find something the right size. Or will have to call my favorite handy man!
ReplyDeleteThe size has me thinking a spring from and OLD twin bed might be the ticket. Not the ones with the coil springs, but the really old ones that are flat and a mattress just lay on top of it. You could then randomly clip old black and white family photos on it, and even wire a vase or two for cut flowers....hmmm....the possibilities are endless!
ReplyDeleteOh, I just love all of the suggestions up there! I love the idea of an old gate or crib sides. I was thinking using chicken wire with something, but that's as far as my imagination got me! I can't wait to see your solution. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks for checking out my blog!! So I've been thinking about your requirements for an new fireplace screen: HUGE, Metal, reused right? Well some ideas spring to mind up front (not sure if other people have mentioned these yet, so sorry if you've heard these already!) an old wrought iron headboard examples: http://www.parksideunlimited.com/images/MS9iron.jpg
ReplyDeleteOR something more ornate: http://www.corbisimages.com/images/572/9002FB9A-EB89-474D-BDCF-C03A62A95DAA/42-17201372.jpg
look around at thrift stores/online/go dumpster diving!/estate sales.
Another thing that might work is the side of an old metal crib. Again you'd probably have to look around for one for a minute.
Then you could spray paint either one of these whatever color you want with some Krylon and you'd be set. Or maybe not ... just some ideas!! :)

{I sent this to your email but it was private:( So it makes for one looong comment!}
I love all these ideas. I have a similar need for a very small old non-working fireplace. As an instant short term fix, I cut down a section of old picket fence... Will check back to see what creative solution you come up with!

Could you use 2 smaller screens?
