Library Sneak Peek

Still a ways to go but this is a good place to show you what has been going on.

  Remember the before.

Since then I have added the bookcases, new craigslist sofa and the table.

I still need to add moulding to the bookcases, paint the trim, and then add lighting. I'm not 100% set on the table in the middle of the room, for some reason I keep thinking low and round coffee table. Either way the table will be refinished in a nice black.

Lighting? Should I go next to the sofa on side tables or behind the sofa on a console?

Lastly the bookcases, help me solve a debate, do you prefer them with the picture hanging on the front or without?

Pretty excited about how it is shaping up. Thanks for entertaining all of my rambling decorating thoughts as I try to get organized and finish this room!

  1. It's coming together...that is a great room! Love the sofa, table, rug and bookcases...I prefer the picture hung on the bookcase, I like the table in the middle but then that opens up the debate for where to put the lighting...decisions, decisions!!

  4. I remember the before pic. You are coming along quite well.
I still have my dresser/buffet sitting over there waiting. I really am going to do it.
Personally, I think the picture hanging on the bookcase looks out of balance just now. I do think, after you add the moulding to the cases they will have more visual weight to them and will be able to handle the picture at that point. Just me.
I think a console behind the sofa would make good use of the bay and give you the lighting and leave lots of space out front for other things.
The space is really looking great. Can't wait to see it finished. Love the rug. Hugs, Ginger

  5. It's really coming along! Here are my thoughts for what it's worth...I would do a narrow sofa table behind the sofa with a buffet lamp on each end. I would hang some sort of drapery panel on each side window (leave middle open) using a tension rod since you don't have any wall space there for hardware. I would move the table from the middle of the room. It's beautiful but looks out of place. What if you backed the bookshelves with a neutral decorative wallpaper? I like the bookshelf without the picture hanging on it. I LOVE the sofa and the rug. I think adding the things I mentioned will create a beautiful focal point in the room. You are off to a great start!

  6. Love it Sarah! It looks really good. Definitely with picture for me, it adds a new dimension to it. And the lounge is divine!

  7. Love it!!! How exciting for you and your family!! I like the bookshelf without the picture, the best, but with it doesn't look bad. I just like the cleaner look. Can't wait to see it all finished!

  8. I think the picture in front is kinda fun. With the table, maybe if you put it off center, it won't bother you as much.

  9. Hello,
visiting via Show Off Your Cottage -
I have seen a table similar to that one at a B&B in the north Georgia mountains - it was in the center of the entrance.
It is wonderful when a room takes shape - you've some very nice finds,
    Kathy

  11. Came over from Show Off your Cottage Monday-- I like the space in this room- I know you're still working in there, but it looks like it is coming along quite well.
It is slow though, isn't it? I've been working on my living room for a while now-- painting, moving, rearranging the furiture and accessories--takes time.
I like the picture on the front of the shelves.

  12. I love, love, love the picture on the front of your bookshelves! It's one of the first things I noticed about your space. I love your sofa find too. It looks perfect for curling up on with a good book. I like the idea of putting a lamp on a sofa table behind the couch too. I love watching the room develop.

  15. Wow! Just wow. I can tell this space is going to look really great when you are finished because it already does. (Nice photo quality, by the way.) So, to answer a few of your questions now. I like the frame on the bookshelf, but I think I would center it -- that's just me though. I'm fond of symmetry. Because your couch just fits the bay window, I'd go with a console behind it and two lamps at either end. So fun!

  17. WITH the picture! Can't wait to see the molding step. I just did 2 toy storage walls like this in each of my kids' rooms last month. My next step is molding, too!

New follower from circle of bliss! nice to meet you!

  18. Thank you for your nice comment :) I like the bookshelves with the picture, thats how I do mine too! I'm turning my dining room into a study/craft room now so I'm anxious to see your progress and get some inspiration. How tall are your bookcases and where did you get them if you don't mind me asking, I can't find any that go anywhere near my ceiling like your's are.
PS: I would put a big round ottoman in front of the couch, I love those, but I like your table too!

  20. I definitely think the room is coming together! I think you should have a sofa table behind the sofa for lighting, books, maybe even some plants. If your room gets that much light...oh orchids my dear...they would look smashing. I do love the idea though of greenery on the sofa table. I think a coffee table is the route to go too...and for the picture...I love the whimsy of it hanging out front. Would you oppose doing a small one towards the bottom right? Maybe even a small chalkboard framed one with a word for the week or something? Ok...now I am rambling. :)

    Cheers~

  25. Thank you for the bookcase info! I had never been to an Ikea before but we just moved nearish one so I went to have a look. Wowsers, what a great deal and they are much sturdier/well made than others I have seen in my price range. I got 2 for a test run in hubby's office and they look great. I can't wait to go back for more for my craft room :)
